Information & Ingredients
Information
Of Transmontano origin, Viosinho survived for centuries almost forgotten, scattered among the old white vineyards of the Douro, blended with other varieties. Only in more recent times has it begun to be truly valued, both in the production of white Port and in still wines with a modern profile. Low-yielding, with small, early-ripening clusters and berries, Viosinho is a demanding and delicate grape, highly susceptible to powdery mildew and rot. It thrives best in warm, sun-drenched climates, where it can fully express its potential. In wines, Viosinho is a grape of contrast: not especially aromatic, yet showing excellent balance between sugar and acidity. The result is structured, full-bodied wines with high alcohol content, though they can occasionally lack freshness and vibrancy. For this reason, it is often blended with other varieties that contribute acidity and aromatic richness, resulting in white wines of great harmony and ageing potential. Today, Viosinho is regarded as one of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes’ hidden gems, a grape that combines tradition and strength, playing an essential role in defining the identity of Portuguese wines.
