Information & Ingredients
Information
Also known internationally as Trousseau (France) or Merenzao (Spain), Bastardo is a grape variety notable for its remarkable earliness, ripening up to two weeks before Castelão. It produces small berries with soft pulp and medium-thick skins, ranging in colour from bluish-black to purple, in compact, cylindrical clusters. Bastardo is characterised by moderate vigour, a trailing growth habit, and high sensitivity to disease, particularly rot, requiring attentive vineyard management. Though yields are typically low to moderate, the variety offers a distinctive aromatic nobility. It delivers youthful wild berry aromas that, with age, evolve into complex notes of smoke, coffee, dried herbs, plums and tobacco, often deepened by subtle hints of wood. Historically cultivated in several Portuguese regions, from Trás-os-Montes and the Beiras to the Algarve, Bastardo features in both regional and DOC wines, including Port, Douro, Bairrada, Dão, Palmela and Madeira. Despite its rarity, it is a grape of great character, appreciated for its delicate bouquet and its ability to produce truly unique wines. Commercial single-varietal Bastardo wines remain scarce and are sometimes confused with Tinta Caiada in the Alentejo.
